A Guide to Taking Care of your Vinyl Fence
Vinyl fences have become quite popular recently as decorative and low maintenance fencing solutions. They tend to last much longer compared to wood fences and require relatively low maintenance compared to other types of fences. The vinyl material does not have a porous makeup, which usually keeps it from getting dirty or grimy and makes maintenance a breeze.
With time, however, your vinyl fence will begin to accumulate grime, dirt and algae on its surface taking away that pristine and nice look it came with. Fortunately, it is extremely easy to clean and take care of your vinyl fence to ensure its longevity.
You can begin by washing off loose debris using a brush and garden hose. This will immediately reveal the problem areas that may require more cleaning efforts. A household cleaning agent such as Simple Green and a brush will work well. Apply the cleaning agent thoroughly and let it settle in for a few minutes. Then scrub using a soft cleaning brush, wiping it clean with a cloth.
For tougher stains, it is ideal to use a brush and small amount of bleach water. Whenever using bleach be careful and first test it on a small portion of the fence to ensure it does not remove or discolor the natural color of your fence. It is also important to ensure you do not harm any vegetation beneath your fence.
Lastly, for those persistent spots such as paint or tar, you will be better off removing them by chipping at them gently with a plastic tool. With a vinyl fence, it is better and safer to keep any hard metal away from the surface of the fence because it may cause serious damage; instead work with a soft scraper that will not leave marks or mar the fence material.
If you want to keep your vinyl fence in a great condition, try to clean it once in a year, at a minimum, ideally in the spring season. Always rinse your vinyl fence thoroughly every time you clean it to ensure a film does not form on its surface. This will help extend the life of your fence and also keep the clean and nice look you desire.
